Emil Orlik: Dame mit Mantel und grossem Hut - Lady with a large hat
hand coloured woodcut, c.1896 Plate/Image Size: 19.5 x 9.5 cm - (7¾ x 3¾ inches) Sheet Size: 24.3 x 11 cm - (9½ x 4¼ inches) signed in pencil
a superb example of this very early woodcut probably made when Orlik was experimenting with the medium together with his friend Bernhard Pankok in Munich; this is very likely a unique impression and has delicate hand-colouring, including a touch of silver on the belt of the dress this woodcut bears a stylistic similarity to those being made by Wassily Kandinsky at about the same date. It is interesting to see in Orlik's woodcut Der Maler und Graphiker Bernhard Pankok - The painter and printmaker Bernhard Pankok, a small version of this print hanging on the wall behind Pankok's head. This print can be found on our Portraits page
on old rag paper with the colours spreading to the margins but in excellent condition EXTREMELY RARE; not mentioned or illustrated in any literature on Orlik
