Emil Orlik: Dame mit Mantel und grossem Hut - Lady with a large hat

Dame mit Mantel und grossem Hut - Lady with a large hat
hand coloured woodcut, c.1896
Plate/Image Size: 19.5 x 9.5 cm - (7¾ x 3¾ inches)
Sheet Size: 24.3 x 11 cm - (9½ x 4¼ inches)
signed in pencil

a superb example of this very early woodcut probably made when Orlik was experimenting with the medium together with his friend Bernhard Pankok in Munich; this is very likely a unique impression and has delicate hand-colouring, including a touch of silver on the belt of the dress
this woodcut bears a stylistic similarity to those being made by Wassily Kandinsky at about the same date. It is interesting to see in Orlik's woodcut Der Maler und Graphiker Bernhard Pankok - The painter and printmaker Bernhard Pankok, a small version of this print hanging on the wall behind Pankok's head. This print can be found on our Portraits page
