portfolio of 12 etchings plus 14 proof state etchings - published 1921
each etching signed and numbered; the colophon page signed and numbered 'VIII' (of X)
one of the rarest items of Orlik's print works, this portfolio is one of only ten of the special edition containing all the 12 etchings of the series as well as including 14 inscribed proof states,
all 26 etchings are printed on hand-made Imperial Japan paper, are in individual passepartouts and with the original tissue guards as issued; the plates and sheets are of various sizes; presented in a decorated cotton covered board portfolio (in very good,clean condition) with two ivory fasteners and contained in the original box of issue;
apart from the etched title page which has a few stray fox marks in the margins, all in pristine condition
the ordinary edition of 100 containing only the 12 etchings of the final state and was printed on Van Gelder laid paper; it is also very scarce complete

Die Reise nach Japan is a pictorial record of scenes from Orlik's journeys to the Far East via Genoa, Egypt, Ceylon, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai to Japan; he sketched the scenes depicted and etched some of the plates on his travels. In 1921he reprinted the plates for publication of the portfolio by F Bruckmann AG, Munich; the series contains some of Orlik's most beautiful etchings and the nuances between the early and finished states are breathtaking, illustrating the mastery of his etching technique

The price of the portfolio is GB£3,500 (5,000 Euros, US$7,200)
